Language Learning Tools for Visual Learners…

January 6th, 2008

If you are a visual learner, listening to (and repeating) CDs, DVDs and tapes might not represent the brightest and best strategy for you.

You need to see things to learn them best. But, if you had a transcript of the recording, you instantly appeal to your learning strength.

Of course, flash cards help you focus your eyes on words and phrases. So, these appeal to visual learners. The problem is that you amass a huge file that is not easy to carry around.

And the ordinary method of using 3″x5″ cards lengthwise, with a single word or phrase on each side is less than streamlined and strategic.

Instead, Place several words on the same card, and hold the card in the “portrait” position. Then, flip the card vertically. This allows the review a many more words with a smaller stack of cards.

Also, create a mental picture for every word that you study.

Exaggerate the image in your mind, create word pictures, even stories that associate with the words.

Another technique is to “Draw pictures” using the letters of the word to make shapes that are associated with the word. If you can do this in your head, instead of paper, so much the better.

Also, with Spanish nouns, be sure to study the Gender at the same time that you study the word.

Of course, visual techniques only work for remembering words that you see. You also have to do two other things.

1.) Associate words to the sounds when you hear the word pronounced

2.) Be able to produce the word in real conversation.

This kind of practice can be done with a voice recorder, tape recorder, or computer with a microphone.

Just be sure that you practice and pronounce with written words in front of you whenever you can.
